What's inside the kit
The provider offboarding checklist
Six things to confirm you control before you talk to anyone:
- Admin credentials β who holds the master passwords to your servers, workstations, and network gear?
- Domain registrar β is your domain registered in your name, or theirs?
- Microsoft 365 global admin β do you have a global admin account your provider doesn't control?
- Firewall configs β could a new provider get a copy of your firewall configuration if you asked?
- Backup access β where do backups live, and can you reach them without your provider's help?
- Documentation β network diagrams, license lists, vendor contacts. If it lives in one engineer's head, it isn't documentation.
The 30/60/90 transition plan template
A working template for what moves when β accounts, monitoring, backups, the handoff. The name is the format, not a promise: your actual timeline depends on your environment, and the template is built to be adjusted.
The 12 questions to ask a replacement MSP

Who this kit is for
You'll get the most out of it if one of these sounds familiar:
- Your provider has gone quiet. Tickets sit for days. The account manager changed again. You're paying every month and can't name one thing that improved this year.
- Your IT person is leaving. The one-person shop that's run your systems for years is retiring, moving, or burned out β and everything lives in their head.
- You've got vendor sprawl. One company runs the network, another does email, a cousin built the website. Nobody owns the whole picture, so problems bounce between them.
Not there yet? Download it anyway. Knowing what you own isn't a switching activity β it's an ownership activity. And if you want the full process laid out first, read our page on how switching IT providers works before you open the kit.
How to use it without tipping off your current provider
You don't have to announce anything to work through this kit. Three ground rules:
- Frame requests as housekeeping. Asking for updated documentation, a license list, or confirmation of your admin access is normal business hygiene, not a resignation letter.
- Verify quietly. Log into your domain registrar. Test whether your Microsoft 365 global admin login works. You're checking your own access, not accusing anyone.
- Don't cancel or hint until you have a plan. In almost all cases, your agreement governs what your provider must hand over and when β read it before you make a move, and get the essentials confirmed first.
